The wine cellar is located in northwestern Bulgaria – 12 km from the city of Vidin and 3 km from the Danube river.

Business Description:

The region is well known for its vineyards and wine production. The whole region has about 600 hectares (1800 acres) of vineyards of the varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Gamza, Muscat Ottonel, Chardonnay and Rkatsiteli. In the last few years some vineyards of the varieties Gewürztraminer, Viognier, Shiraz, Pinot noir, Cabernet franc and some others were created. It is registered in the National Vine and Wine Chamber and it also has two registered trademark names

Land

The cellar includes about 17 hectares (42 acres) of vineyards. About 10 hectares (25 acres) are newly created (April 2008) high quality vineyards of the Cabernet sauvignon and Chardonnay varieties. The saplings were shipped from CANTINA RAUSCEDO Italy. The variety portfolio also includes Merlot, Gamza, Pamid, Muscat Ottonel and Rkatsiteli, most of which are traditional or native Bulgarian varieties. Currently a preparation is in process for planting of 3 more hectares for which permission is already acquired.

Equipment

The farming equipment consists of machinery imported from Italy of the following brands: New Holland, Nardi, OMA, Gucci, Oleo-mac.

Manpower

The farming manpower consists of 5 employees with a monthly wager of 400 BGN or 200 EUR and 10-15 seasonally employed local villagers with an hourly wager of 2.50 BGN or 1.25 EUR. The technology and production process is lead by engineer Ilian Ignatov and founder Luben Calotoff in collaboration with personnel of two other employees.

Finance

The average monthly expenses for labor, fuel and chemical supplies in 2010 was 290 BGN/hectare or 150 EUR/hectare or roughly 60 EUR/acre. The production capacity is 40 000 liters of wine per annum – 25 000 red and 15 000 white wine.

GROWTH PROSPECTS

Company

We have started a project for growing the production capacity to 120 000 liters per annum. Four parcels (2400 sq. m) were recently acquired close to the main premises that are intended for additional production, processing and storage rooms (1400 sq. m) and a small 20 room hotel for wine tourism. All of these buildings have a completed architectural preliminary design.

Land

The village area has many private land owners including vineyard owners. Occasionally land is offered for sale so there are many possibilities for land expansion.

Tourism

The region itself has a good tourism potential due to the proximity to the Danube river, good landscape and some amazing natural and historical landmarks including the Baba Vida Fortress, the Magura Cave, the Belogradchik Rocks (which were recently a top candidate for one of the seven wonders of the world) and many others. To provide a good local base for tourism we have requested a concession on a former military polygon for the construction of a motorsport site. Currently the polygon is under municipal legislation which expires in the end of 2012. The application is under inspection and has a positive legal opinion.
